Location & Hours

The Sutro Tunnel Historic Site, located just outside Dayton, Nevada, offers visitors a chance to explore one of the Comstock’s most remarkable engineering achievements.

Construction of the Sutro Tunnel began in 1869 under the direction of Adolf Sutro. Completed in 1878, the nearly four-mile-long tunnel was designed to drain water from the Comstock mines, improve ventilation, and provide access to the underground workings.

Today, the nonprofit Friends of Sutro Tunnel is dedicated to preserving, restoring, and sharing this important piece of Nevada history.

Visitors can explore the historic townsite of Sutro, discover 11 surviving historic buildings, visit the museum and gift shop, and venture approximately 315 feet inside the original tunnel.

We offer guided tours, self-guided tours, private group experiences, educational programs, and special events throughout the year. Our ongoing restoration efforts are supported by dedicated volunteers, donors, and community partners who help keep Nevada’s mining heritage alive.

Whether you’re a history enthusiast, a local resident, or visiting the Reno–Tahoe–Carson City region, the Sutro Tunnel offers a unique opportunity to experience the history of Nevada’s Comstock mining era.
